First edition. Tall octavo (245 x 165 mm). 302 pp. Original black cloth with gilt titles and illustration to front board and spine, pictorial endpappers. Top edge stained red, others uncut. Illustrated with 12 black & white plates including frontispiece, additional decorated initials and tailpiece illustrations after Frank Papé. Skull bookplate on page facing half title.

Spine extremes lightly bumped, spine gilt slightly faded, minimal foxing mainly on first couple of pages. In very good plus condition.

Frank C. Papé (1878-19720 was a British illustrator best known and remembered for his fairy-tale illustrations, which were characterised by imagination and humour. The well of st. Clare is a short story collection by the French author Anatole France, with topics ranging from encounters with Satan to doomed romances.
